Extracting GIF animation data

I am working on a project, and want the user to be able to specify an animated gif file, and have my program be able to load it, extract the frames into surfaces, get the timing/looping information so it can be rendered properly. I realize that there are probably better ways to animate images, but using pre-existing GIFs is pretty much a necessity. Are there any libraries out there that can do this? Preferably something that can interface with SDL, since that is what I am most familiar with. Any help would be much appreciated.
