Remember Bionic Commando?

Well I want to do a sort of remake and hopefully publish it over XBLA, and have been working on concept art, updating the character designs and fleshing out the environments, and rewrote the dialogue. Recently I created collision meshes in 3ds max that follow the level layouts from the NES game exactly, and now I'm curious if the gameplay will hold up with "real" physics. After a quick play around with XNA, I discovered it was too many hoops to jump through to prototype the gameplay, so I've decided to prototype in Panda instead, which has pretty much all the basic groundwork laid out for me. My question is, let's say the prototype turns out to actually be fun to play and worth developing, will I be able to port the feel of the gameplay over to XNA exactly? I apologize if this is a dumb question for this forum's standards, I'm a professional game artist but a frustrated programmer wannabe. Thanks in advance!

Most often the feel of the game depends on the timing - for instance, many of the old NES games feel a bit awkward when played on a computer because the timing is off, or simply to perfect.

However, I do think that it'll be perfectly plausible to recreate the feel on XNA! :)

Yes I remember!

if you are really gonna make a game/remake out of it: I would ditch the overhead levels and the world map, they seemed very tacked on- I know that they were trying to link to non-bionic commando with the overhead levels, but they just didn't compare to the swinging-fun of the side-scroller levels.

I would also recommend taking a look at the NES temple of doom Indiana Jones game.

- I know I am not directly answering your question, but it sounds like an interesting project.

If you know what you're doing, sure. The real question is, will you be able to obtain a license to make a Bionic Commando remake from... CAPCOM? As the link indicates, CAPCOM itself released a retro port very recently, so it's not like it's a property that's been abandoned for a long time...

Good luck.

I'm aware of the legal implications, thanks. Like I mentioned, I'm redoing everything so while it will strongly hint at being Bionic Commando, it won't be at all. The only thing I'm retaining is the level layouts, unless there is a copyright breach on those too that I'm not aware of?

I see you're business lead on these forums, but why that reply? Are you posting to a "remake" thread out of routine? I honestly find it slightly condescending.

Anyhow thanks for the tip, and I think my questions have been answered somewhat.

Actually, he just wanted to warn you simply because a lot of companies WILL take legal action (some just send out seice and desist letters, but others may pursue their rights further). He was noting that CAPCOM has recently re-released Bionic Commando, which means it's still making money (and not a discontinued product or abandonware or anything along those lines) and they may not like it being reproduced.

Like most "remakes", you'd need to produce original content for all graphics/sounds/etc, and use a new name. "Cybernetic Operative" perhaps? :D

That's unfortunate, but your technical question was trivial: "Can I do X with Y?" "Yes."

The text of your post raised more interesting questions, especially since Bionic Commando is one of my 10 favorite games of all time. Realizing that CAPCOM recently released the game for PlayStation 2 (and might thus be looking into doing the same for Xbox Live), you'd need to be careful to ensure your remake was different enough to avoid legal action. There's no condescension in reminding a person of a potential pitfall. That's all on you, my friend.

Fair enough. I could call it Iron G.I. for all I care...Guess I should start calling it a spiritual update instead of remake quote-unquote. :D

Main difference would be that I want to be able to launch the bionic arm...er I mean personal winch...at any angle instead of 45 degree increments. The level layouts, I wanted to retain as a case study. If the changed game mechanics call for level layout changes, so be it...that's why I want to create a prototype first. :)

I think that changes the gameplay fundamentally, correct me if I'm wrong.

Besides, story wise, I like the idea of warfare in the late 80's and reviving Hitler for his secret knowledge on launching a mobile gigantic laser based WMD. So sue me, hehe. Yeah I'll take care with the presentation side of things so it feels familiar, but not too familiar.

Anyway this is veering away from game programming territory, so thread closed, and thanks for answering my silly trivial question.
