windowing C++

Recommended Posts

hello i am thinking about re writting the GUI of my game which is MFC based (MDI). I have not much experience in gaming, and i would like to know what would be the best approach. What is important is: 1- this is a splitter mfc view , 2- i am using extensively context menu, CListCtrl, CComboBox, CTreeView, CDialog. 3- Some graphics are put in "custom wnd" of some dialogs, those graphics are directX based and i dont need to change this engine, just the windows (kind of skinning them really and make them less xpwindows-like) from there i would like to know if i shall use irrlicht windows api, sdl, Flash maybe ? what do you advise ? Thanks a lot!

Using GDI controls in Direct3D surfaces is supported, but it tends to incur a significant performance hit. If you only need a small window of high-performance graphics, then you can place the D3D surface inside of an MFC view. If you need to place the controls within the surface, I recommend either reimplementing their logic or looking for a library that does (preferably the latter; focus on your core competence).

An example of a library for using sophisticated UIs in your game is gameswf, which formed the foundation of what became Scaleform Gfx (which is licensed by BioWare for using in Mass Effect). It lets you use UIs developed in Flash in your game, so artists can work in an environment familiar to them.
