You mean like... paper?

It's possible to take a normal tablet and basically create your own Cintiq with it, but it requires some tinkering. More like "hey look at this whacky thing I did" than a real alternative.

Grabbing an Intuos2 6x8 off of Ebay is a great way to go. You should be able to find one under $150, they work just as good as Intuos3 and better than everything else.

Exactly. People get so used to seeing the whole picture on the display - its hard to revert back to drawing on the picture itself, or so they say.

Oh, I will, but don't hold your breath. There are several purchases ahead of it in the queue (like a 20" iMac Core 2 Duo, and a couple of CS3 apps).

Of course, the other thing you need to consider is that tablet PCs can be uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time because of the warmth of the processor -- not something I anticipated when I purchased mine.

My girlfriend bought a Wacom Bamboo Fun a few days ago, and she's very nice (the tablett). Originally I bought for myself a Trust TB-4200 A4 size but it's really to large, A6 are cooler than I had to think.

Warning about Bamboos Fun : Not currently supported on a Linux. But who would to do graphism on a Linux system :) ?

I purchased a blue medium bamboo fun last week. $205 with shipping. I don't have a whole lot of experience with the full featured wacoms but this one is quite nice. I hadn't noticed the high pitched whine before reading this thread. I can't hear it unless my head is within a couple inches of the tablet. I thought it was my linksys router. I also discovered that I can't hear the whine out of my left ear. Stupid TMJ.

i bought a toshiba satellite r25-s3503 convertible tablet pc about a year ago.

and it's amazing.

however, i'm not artist (digital or otherwise).

something to consider at least
