Does anybody around here know of an easy way to display text in xna? i have had a look at some tutorials but they seem to say to use some sort of algorithm for finding the letter you want from a texture of the alphabet which is beyond my mathematical abilities at the moment.

SpriteFont is what you're after. There are several tutorials around for it, but I believe it was added in the latest release of XNA Referesh 1.0 or something to that effect.

Check the XNA Documentation. The Programming Guide section has a topic titled "How to: Draw Text".

When in doubt, read the manual.
