I have something like this: in the .h:
class Object{
public:
...
private;
boost::shared_ptr<Mesh> my_mesh;
};

and in .cpp:
Object::Object(){
... here I need to initialize the shared pointer and load the Mesh
}

the problem is that i don't think i'm doing it right because the pointer in the shared_ptr is null. Can someone explain to me how to use the shared_ptr in this context?

Your best bet is using initializer lists to initialize the shared pointer using its constructor.

Object::Object() : my_mesh(new Mesh()) {}
