SDL_Tiff to OpenGl texture

Hello..! I need to print some text on the screen(bsp Debug information) with opengl. I know that i can use bitmap fonts , but , that will run only under windows, and since i also like to support linux , i have to ignore this option. I have an idea that may sound stupid. Can i use SDL_Tiff lib just to load the font file , print the text on a surface, and then create a normal gl texture ? What you guys think? Thanks for your time.
