now, i know that there are a lot of profillers avalable. i want one for use in visual studio (as little messing about as possible, preferably) that gives you visual data and allows you to see exactly what lines of code are taking up how much time. i have heard that the one for amd processors (cant rember the exact name for it atm) is very good, problem is it can often crash/wont work on intel cpu's (as youd expect) given i mainly use intel cpu's, but do sometimes use amd ones id prefer one like that, but that can work on both intel and amd chips

Assuming you mean C++ code, DevPartner had a free "community edition" of their C++ profiler which was really good. Version 7 integrated fine into VC++ and delivered very useful results, comfortably presented inside the IDE.

Past tense because they went the usual "corporate" way. Version 8 is now restricted in time and in my personal projects failed to connect to the executable... turning from a great product to a useless product in a single revision. Have a look around on download portals or such if you can still get the V7 somewhere.

I've played around a bit with AMD's CodeAnalyst, but like you say, it tends to crash on Intel CPU's (on paper it supports non-AMD CPU's though)

The uber-expensive super deluxe version of Visual Studio 2005 comes with a profiler too, but I haven't used it enough to really judge it (And again, not exactly free)
