Rather then create my own I was hoping that I could just find a good tile map editor. I'm looking for a very advanced tile map editor that will create maps simplar to StarCraft. Perhaps something that can export the map to a simple format. Can anyone suggest a good tile maping editor? What editors have you tried? What did you like or dislike about them?

Do a search for PGU ("Phil's pyGame Utilities"). Included in this package is a tilemap editor that's easy to use, and in possibly the simplest format you could think of: They're just TGA files. Each pixel in the image it produces represents a tile. And that includes background, foreground, and "code" tiles too (and you obviously have to put a handler in your project's code for those code tiles).

There's also Mappy and the like... but I really prefer this one, just for the more convenient output of an image file rather than a tile array.
