My friend recently finished a sprite based Online RTS (pokemon type view) that is pretty extensive in features. He's not 100% satisfied with the game play, and therefor has moved on to other bigger and better projects. We were contemplating releasing the source as an opensource community project similar to Planeshift. What would be the demand for a simple, opensource 2d mmorts made in java? Is it worth the trouble leading up the endeavor? Would people be interested? Thanks, Karan [Edited by - Karan Bhangui on November 24, 2007 11:15:51 AM]

To be blunt - engines are dime a dozen, especially unsupported and abandoned ones.

When it comes to MMO type of games, user will be providing a service to customers - not a product. As such, a guarantee for engine's support must exist for reasonable future.

If you feel that someone could profit from it, that you would benefit from releasing it, and that OSS is the way to go, release it. Perhaps someone will pick it up, perhaps it's a fully playable game that can be operated at some form of profit.

There is a small number of MMO engines out there that get used, simply because in online world, engines are irrelevant - they don't make or break the project. It's the assets and maintaining the service where all effort goes.
