Ubuntu - Gutsy Upgrade, Display Problems

Note: the only way it was working, even partially was with the binary NVIDIA driver

As soon as I saw the greeter was crashing I switched to tty2.

tried dpkg-reconfigure gdm -> it told me it would change when all X servers were closed

installed those modules -> had to uninstall nvidia-glx-new

modprobe nvidia -> no output

overwrote xorg.conf with the new one (should I delete all the old ones/backups?)

pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart (because "shutdown" doesn't actually restart the system when I'm logged in) -> maybe this didn't finish configuring gdm?

came back with the same problem -> no error in the log file, which is called "Xorg.93.log"

I've never run Ubuntu but, though this won't tell you what went wrong, this would probably fix it.

Try this if no other suggestions are working, rename your xorg.conf file to xorg.conf.old, boot your system without X running, and uninstall your current nvidia module.

you can then either use ubuntu's package manager (again, never used ubuntu, so i don't even know if it lets you), or download and install the newest driver directly from here

The greeter was still crashing, you mean? Maybe look inside the GDM log files located in /var/log/gdm/ for errors then. Did you see an NVidia logo before GDM tried to come up?

I like what Raptor85 said. Backup your xorg.conf and reboot and hope it generates a new one for you (you seem like you're comfortable enough in the console you could restore the old xorg.conf) and then install (or reinstall) the nvidia-glx-new package, and then see if the "nvidia" driver works. if nvidia-glx-new doesn't work i believe there's an nvidia-glx as well which might be older and possibly better compatible.

But I need to ask, were you using a binary blob from nvidia's website? If you were, getting a new kernel will ALWAYS break it, and you need to recompile the kernel module. also if you're using a binary blob you need to have DISABLED_MODULES="nv" in /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common (and it should be DISABLED_MODULES="" if you're using the driver from nvidia-glx-new or nvidia-glx)

No, I had done everything by the "Ubuntu book," so no binary.
I was running XGL/Compiz with some quirks, so later it was just XGL.

In the mean time, I must admit I've been unfaithful :( I've been looking at and downloading Linux Mint. Normally, one thinks of someone as having a completely customized linux that is devastating to lose and start with a fresh install, but all I really did was setup the cool 3D effects, LAMP server, and the IEs for Linux. So some work, but not too much. I already lost the printer hacks in the upgrade.

Well I had a similar experience once upgrading. Its really hit or miss, as a result, I keep my / and /home on different partitions so in the event that an upgrade fails i can just reformat / and reinstall there without harming /home where all of my user data is. You could do the same thing for /etc if you felt so inclined.
