I've done some research, not to mention keeping abreast of job postings with various RPG game developers; while a number of companies, of varying sizes, are on the lookout for artists (even of the traditional variety, to produce in-game artwork) it seems that nobody is ever looking for someone whose major ability lies in writing. Is this typically handled by someone within a company, who fills some other function as their primary job description? Given an interest in writing for RPGs, what other skills should a person have, by way of filling a complete role... or simply standing out amidst the countless computer-literate types who would happily commit genocide to work in gaming development?

One issue is just that there are not many RPG developers out there. I do know that BioWare hires writers sometimes, but they usually require a lot of proven experience (like having published fiction).

Another issue is that there won't be many writer positions necessary for any given project, compared to the number of artists, programmers, and such necessary for completion. So most of the time, companies probably have all of the writers they need.

And yes, sometimes people within the company might do work for the position, especially if they're one of the lead designers and have done it in the past, as well as having a vested interest in the way the story plays out in the game.
