OpenGL Terrain Rendering Recommendation

This is the first time i'm trying to render a terrain in OpenGL and I want some recommendations based on your experience with the topic. I want to represent a 2km square area. I'm using libnoise (great) to generate the heightmap. Current size is 512x512 pixels. First question: is this enough? I don't want high-quality geometry but I prefer high-quality texturing... May be 1024x1024 is better? Of course I'm currently rendering the terrain in "brute-force" mode (no realtime LOD), but i'm looking forward to implement some geomipmapping. In this respect, what is the best method for a good performance rendering 512x512 or 1024x1024 terrain geometry? For texturing I will use the following textures blended: 1) base texture 2) detail map 3) shadow map This is ok? What are your texturing approaches in terrain rendering? For shadow maps, there is some way to generate during level load with fast times? In realtime? Thank you very much for your help.

So, I'd not recomment just heightmaps, because they aren't best for representing huge area (but 2 square kilometers ... well, maybe 1024 * 1024 would be enough). You're new to terrain rendering - try height mapping (also known as displacement mapping).
I'm using Clipmaps (very close technique to Carmack's Megatexture) to texturing terrain and to render terrain (well, it's pretty hard hit to performance, because you need to displace terrain in realtime - i'm using hardware displacement mapping on graphics cards, but you need fast GPU), often I use technique, which I call cell terrain mapping - The Elder Scrolls 4 : Oblivion used similar techniques - high polygon terrains in nearest cells and low poly in distance. Also you can try realtime voxelization of terrain.
Clipmapping is one of the best ways to texture terrain, but it needs a lot of hard drive space (with really big worlds like 50 * 50 km it needs several GigaBytes of COMPRESSED texture)! Texture blending is alternative for Clipmapping, but I didn't use it anymore. Another way is color mask (or another type of mask) texture mapping, it has very close to texture blending, but you can blend whole materials.
Shadow maps - well, it's a little complicated there. What quality do you need? Also you can combine "terrain shadow maps" with realtime shadow maps of sorrounding enviroment (something similar was in Gothic 3 from Piranha Bytes, very good game, but had a huge amount of bugs :( ). If you'd bake shadow maps before rendering (it doesn't matter, if in 3d modelling program like 3d studio, or during loading of application), you have to render every STATIC OBJECT on terrain and store that terrain shadow map (it may be huge F.e. 8192*8192 or more - if you'd update it, you can update it during time of "playing"). Then render (during "playing") standart dynamic shadow map for dynamic objects. In shader combine this two methods.
I'm using terrain cell mapping (or clipmapping), texturing using clipmaps, shadowing is all dynamic using realtime radiosity (it's very high hit to performance, but IT's one of the best solutions to get high quality lighting) and PCMLSM shadow mapping (I need very high quality lighting).

I'm using libnoise as perlin noise generator and I like the features it gives, but I can't get proper normal maps from libnoise. What method should I use to generate normals for the terrain?=

- For terrain LOD I'd use clipmaps, it is quite simple to implement and rather efficient technique.

- To generate normal map, you can use your noise generator library. In order to calculate the normal, you'll need several height samples around the point, much like in the same way as you'd calculate a normal for a triangle using cross-product.

This is very simplistic method for the normal calculation and may result some artifacts, but should work for beginning.

Well I'm advancing with terrain rendering, already coded a gradient class for doing multiple point gradients. I used this for per-vertex coloring, which resulted in a colorful terrain, albeit without much features.

Now I want to ask some questions relating to texturing the terrain -- better than that, I will post my ideas and I would want to hear some opinions.

1. I will convert map every heightmap pixel to my color gradient arrays . This will be the base texture (1024x1024 or 512x512). Since it's basically plain color areas, what about using texture compression? Any benefit?

2. I'm getting very sharp highlight on the terrain (areas at full brightness, other at only ambient). Could this problem become from improper normal generation (i'm using libnoise normal-map from noise-map function), or I need to adjust OpenGL light parameters?

3. Should I bind/unbind the textures on every frame? I think I should not, but I ask just for it.

Well' I've trying repeatedly to apply a texture to my terrain but I does not work, it gets with just one color... :(

Plz help me, tried hours without solution ..... :( :(

You may also want to see "terrain splatting". It is just texturing the terrain with several 256x256 textures... Tiling, but looks pretty good, and most of the terrain engines still use splatting, not those fancy MegaTextures.

Sharp shadows could be caused by too large normals.

BTW, normals:
Derived from cross products, simple and efficient:

Normalize(normal);

I guess its better and cheaper than cross produtcts.

I'm using your normalization function... but no lighting. My heightmap is range is -1..1 , seems that you assume a heightmap range per pixel of [0..1]...

i'm correct?

      So, i'm still on my quest to unterstanding the intricacies of HDR and implementing this into my engine. Currently i'm at the step to implementing tonemapping. I stumbled upon this blogposts:

      and tried to implement some of those mentioned tonemapping methods into my postprocessing shader.
      The issue is that none of them creates the same results as shown in the blogpost which definitely has to do with the initial range in which the values are stored in the HDR buffer. For simplicity sake i store the values between 0 and 1 in the HDR buffer (ambient light is 0.3, directional light is 0.7)
      This is the tonemapping code:

      The shader code looks like this:

      But the output of the tonemapping function heavily depends on the initial range of the values in the HDR buffer. (You can't expect to set the sun intensity the first time to 10 and the second time to 1000 and excpect the same result if you feed that into the tonemapper.) So i suppose that this also depends on the exposure which i have to implement?
      To check this i plotted the tonemapping curve:
      You can see that the curve goes only up to around to a value of 0.21 (while being fed a value of 1) and then basically flattens out. (which would explain why the image got darker.)
       
      My guestion is: In what range should the values in the HDR buffer be which then get tonemapped? Do i have to bring them down to a range of 0-1 by multiplying with the exposure?
      For example, if i increase the values of the light by 10 (directional light would be 7 and ambient light 3) then i would need to divide HDR values by 10 in order to get a value range of 0-1 which then could be fed into the tonemapping curve. Is that correct?

      I'm using the OPENGL with eclipse+JOGL.
      My goal is to create movement of the camera and the player.
      I create main class, which create some box in 3D and hold 
      an object of PlayerAxis.
      I create PlayerAxis class which hold the axis of the player.
      If we want to move the camera, then in the main class I call to 
      the func "cameraMove"(from PlayerAxis) and it update the player axis.
      That's work good.
      The problem start if I move the camera on 2 axis, 
      for example if I move with the camera right(that's on the y axis)
      and then down(on the x axis) -
      in some point the move front is not to the front anymore..
      In order to move to the front, I do
      player.playerMoving(0, 0, 1);
      And I learn that in order to keep the front move, 
      I need to convert (0, 0, 1) to the player axis, and then add this.
      I think I dont do the convert right.. 
      I will be glad for help!

      So, i'm currently trying to implement an SSAO shader from THIS tutorial and i'm running into a few issues here.
      Now, this SSAO method requires view space positions and normals. I'm storing the normals in my deferred renderer in world-space so i had to do a conversion and reconstruct the position from the depth buffer.
      And something there goes horribly wrong (which has probably to do with worldspace to viewspace transformations).
      (here is the full shader source code if someone wants to take a look at it)
      Now, i suspect that the normals are the culprit.
      vec3 normal = ((uNormalViewMatrix*vec4(normalize(texture2D(sNormals, vTexcoord).rgb),1.0)).xyz); "sNormals" is a 2D texture which stores the normals in world space in a RGB FP16 buffer.
      Now i can't use the camera viewspace matrix to transform the normals into viewspace as the cameras position isn't set at (0,0,0), thus skewing the result.
      So what i did is to create a new viewmatrix specifically for this normal without the position at vec3(0,0,0);

Is this right or is there a better/correct way of transforming a world space normal into viewspace?

      I'm having issues loading textures, as I'm clueless on how to handle / load images maybe I missing something, but the past few days I just google a lot to try to find a solution. Well theres two issues I think, one I'm using Kotlin Native (EAP) and OpenGL wrapper / STB image, so I'm not quite sure wheres the issue, if someone with more experience could give me some hints on how to solve this issue?
      The code is here, if I'm not mistaken the workflow is pretty straight forward, stbi_load returns the pixels of the image (as char array or byte array) and you need to pass those pixels directly to glTexImage2D, so a I'm missing something here it seems.

      I've noticed in most post processing tutorials several shaders are used one after another: one for bloom, another for contrast, and so on. For example: 
      postprocessing.quad.bind() // Effect 1 effect1.shader.bind(); postprocessing.texture.bind(); postprocessing.quad.draw(); postprocessing.texture.unbind(); effect1.shader.unbind(); // Effect 2 effect2.shader.bind(); // ...and so on postprocessing.quad.unbind() Is this good practice, how many shaders can I bind and unbind before I hit performance issues? I'm afraid I don't know what the good practices are in open/webGL regarding binding and unbinding resources. 
      I'm guessing binding many shaders at post processing is okay since the scene has already been updated and I'm just working on a quad and texture at that moment. Or is it more optimal to put shader code in chunks and bind less frequently? I'd love to use several shaders at post though. 
      Another example of what I'm doing at the moment:
      1) Loop through GameObjects, bind its phong shader (send color, shadow, spec, normal samplers), unbind all.
      2) At post: bind post processor quad, and loop/bind through different shader effects, and so on ...
