lighting

I was thinking if its a good idea (or something like this already exists) to make a lightmap in the runtime from shadows and dinamic lights for an object thats lets say farther. For example I need dinamic lighting and shadows on a defined area near the player. The objects that are too far doesnt need realtime computation of lightshould use the lightmap Any hint ? Its a good idea ?

umm computing lightmaps isn`t usually real time task(which is an advantage, during runtime "computing" shadows from lightmaps is usually very cheap). take a look at how gothic 3 is doing it. it uses lightmaps as any other game(on every distance), plus it makes dynamic shadows on certain distance to player(using shadow map).

also note that writing a code that makes (nice) lightmaps isn`t easy. read something about it.
