Is it possible to change what gets displayed in the address bar. For instance, instead of the URL a "welcome to the site" message is displayed. ??????

I certainly hope not.

The address bar is extremely important information and should not be tampered with. Write your welcome message inside the browser window.

If you want a welcome message that high up on the browser, I'd suggest typing it in the <title></title> block of html. Why do you want it in the URL window anyways?

Er...that would open up the way to all kinds of malicious attacks. To answer your question:

Some unsolicited advice: don't use a welcome message like that at all.
It's a website, not a birthday party.
