Strategy Game Idea

This was an idea I had after playing Disgaea. It hasn't been fully fleshed out, but I think I have the basic idea. The game would take place in a world where multiple planes exist. These planes are leveled, with the physical world at the bottom. Only a few in the world are able to connect to these planes and create avatars of themselves within them. However, this world is ravaged by war, and your band of military soldiers are pitted against many enemies your nation has made. Much like Disgaea or Final Fantasy Tactics, you would be allowed to "create" characters to join your force and the gameplay would be very similar to the two games. On the other hand, a new aspect of gameplay would be added in. As you battle terrorists and opposing enemy forces, some of your units will be allowed to enter levels of the planes to fight. Every character with capability to enter these planes will have an avatar (chosen at creation) to aid them in conflict within a level. A character can enter multiple levels, and they are allowed to play up to one avatar per level. Avatars move with the character, and if a character is killed in the bottom level (the real world), the avatar dies with him/her. This does not go both ways though. If an avatar dies, the player does not die. Unfortunately, a killed avatar inflicts a large penalty on the character it belongs to. People enter the planes only mentally, meaning the actual person always stays in the real world. This also means a person will become more concentrated and at a disadvantage per plane he/she enters, making them a prime target for enemies in the real world. On the contrary, avatars are more powerful than characters. There are a total of 10 planes an avatar may "live" in, with avatars becoming stronger per plane. For example, an avatar living in the first plane at its highest level (lets say, 99) would be the equivalent of a character in the real world at their highest level with the benefits of an additional 10 levels. Meanwhile, an avatar living in the 5th level at its highest level would be the equivalent of a character in the real world at their highest level with the benefits of an additional 50 levels (while not actually having these levels). This could mean that an avatar living in the tenth plane at it highest level would be the equivalent of a character in the real world at their highest level with the benefits of an additional 100 levels (that's like a 199 level character!). Another perk for avatars are that they all are allowed to use psychic powers corresponding to what kind of avatar they are. For example, a swordsman avatar could use psychic powers to summon ghostly swords to do his bidding, or a gunslinger avatar could use psychic powers to improve his power and accuracy with his weapons.

I don't mean this as abject criticism, only as a mechanism to help you refine your idea.

How is the avatar concept better/different from the Reincarnation concept presented by Disgaea, or the 'student' capabilities in Disgaea 2? At first glance it seems a little complicated and a little troublesome to keep tabs on all the avatars/planes.
