Moving along a specific path

Hello, and have a nice year 2008! I am making a game that is based on actual maps (lands and stuff, 2d image only, no 3d involved) that the user would move along lines (the national roads). Since the lines would be complex, my guess was to create a mask of the "walkable" areas of the map store them into another image, and check them along the coordinates that the user's image center would be so that to ensure that the image would be inside the line border at all time. Is there any theory (and/or code) regarding this approach?
