zoom in orthographic mode

I'm working on an editing program and would like to zoom in orthographic modes. However, simple moving the camera closer to its target point does not work for orthographic projections, as it does for perspective projections. So is the usual strategy to just scale the width/height of the view volume box to simulate zoom? Should I keep a scaling factor that is incremented/decremented in response to mouse input to do the zoom?

Yup, that's about right. Scaling those parts of the Orthographic projection matrix will "zoom".

Moving the camera will just put somethings behind the camera as you move it through the scene. So be sure you take that into account as you move the camera through your editing program.
