I would like to get a small character onto my DirectX9 window and have been reading tutorials on the basics of Direct3D. My character is simply a square with a face as a BMP. My question is, is the best way to do this to simply draw a square and load the BMP as a texture onto the square? Pretty basic I know, but Im just beginning Thanks

Load the image as a texture - D3DXCreateTextureFromFile() would be a good starting point. Then have a look into ID3DXSprite for actual rendering - it'll save you getting too involved with the internals of rendering.
