C++ Menu Creation

Hi everybody So I want to display a menu in dev-c++ for a windows game. I have created a window which draws a bitmap. Now I want to draw over this image some strings. My first thought was to create a couple of labels. The problem is that the label had a background of its own and I couldn't find a way to make it transparent. After searching the Internet I found an interesting function called DrawString. However I can't figure out the object that I am supposed to declare. You see the function is called like this: graphics.DrawString(); In all of the examples I found, the procedure is beeing called from inside the On_Paint event using the e argument. Unfortunately I want to call the procedure from an other place inside my code. Can anybody help me with either of these problems?? Or maybe tell me of another way to display the menu.
