Basically what I do is draw my map of 50x50 pixel squares, max of 150x150 (50x50 squares) of these squares to a offscreen surface, I have 5 different layers and it draws them in order, and for animation of tiles if our current viewport is over said animated tile it updates the offscreen surface in that location through all of the layers 1 -5 if they are there... is this a pretty good method? heh im getting a decent fps even on low end systems. the struct containing the map information is updated with the animations if its on screen or not but the graphic is only redrawn if its in the on screen area + 2 tiles in each direction for scrolling purposes.
