32-bit color in DirectDraw7

how do you set up a directdraw surface to display argb colors, I've tried:
ddpf.dwFlags = DDPF_RGB;

but its not working, im writing the argb integers to the surface memory but its just displaying the pixels 3 spaces apart because it's still set to 8-bit mode. any help would be appreciated. [Edited by - staticVoid2 on February 12, 2008 11:24:26 AM]
