If you're doing just a zelda-like game is there any reason to use display lists? My background and enemies and main character, all those TGA's are in memory until a new map loads. The draw function just draws rectangles for all of them and texture maps. It seems to me that display lists are for storing complicated 3D shapes and storing texture mapped rectangles in display lists for a zelda-like game would be pointless. Am I right?

display list will probably get you some performance gain though its entirely possible you won't need it

EDIT:
though im working on a project with fairly low graphics requirements but im using vertex arrays since they have better performance than intermediate mode, more flexible than display lists and supported on older cards than vbo's
