Small windows input problem

im using the windows api GetKeyboardState() function to get the state of all the keys on the keyboard. IM using this for my UI input and say im typing in a text box if i push the "A" key i will get like 20 A's in my text box. I think this is because it takes 20 frames for me to push then release the A key. So how would i go about implementing a system where if i push the A key it will only appear once no matter how often the keyboard state is updated? Thanks
