3D Background

The most common 3D background technology is the well known skybox, and skysphere, however both often have artifacts when rendered. So I'd like to discuss alternative 3D background technology's that can be created using MSVC++ 2008 and Direct X 9.0c as I am fairly new to the language any pointers would be greatly appreshiated.
