I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with that statement but I am making a first attempt at music with the computer (I've played music all my life, but never did anything on the computer) and I want to start making songs out of the 8bit sounds (like from the original Nintendo.) Anyone have any suggestions on how to go about that? Is there a program anyone knows of? What would be the process to do something like that?

Hi Chrono,

Try Modplug tracker. You can find info and the download here: http://www.modplug.com/trackerinfo.html

It is a free program.

Enjoy!

Thank you! I didnt get to try it yet cause it looks like I need a keyboard to run it(my old keyboard broke but I will be getting a new one soon :D)
try odo's synths -

he has another freeware for c64/sid sounds due out soon - info here

these are vst format instruments. kvraudio has a searchable database for vst hosts and resources, which are probably prudent to investigate if you plan on pursuing computer music.

in the database you will find several free synths for the sounds you're looking for.

You can run without keyboard. I mostly do it as well. Atomic gave also some good links, especially kvraudio. It is paradise for free and very well made synths and effects!

Good luck :)
