Compressed Greyscale format?!

Hey guys, I've been looking for ways of saving texture memory recently but have run into a dead end. The situation is this; I have a lot of greyscale textures in my project and I cannot find an efficient way to compress them with existing dds or dxt formats. There doesnt seem to be a dxt option for one channel 8 bit compression (or any one channel compression at all)so at the moment they are being compressed as an RGB texture which seems very wasteful to me. Does anyone out there know of a way I could make this more efficient? Thanks Rob
