Shader calls to the GPU

Quick question about when sending hlsl commands to the GPU. When they are sent, does the execution of your code that is sending it (e.g. the gaming engine) wait until the gpu is done like forking? Is it reasonable to consider threading the calls to the GPU in order to add the GPU as another processor, and not have the rest of the engine wait for the execution of gpu to finish? Thanks.
