I'd like to make my own mmorpg, and I wanted to ask if these books are worth getting, so if you have any advice, or would like to recommend other books please respond. I already have "Programming Role Playing Games 2nd Ed" by Jim Adams so if you can comment on that as well it will be greatly appreciated. Programming Game AI by Example by Mat Buckland http://www.gamedev.net/columns/books/bookdetails.asp?productid=434 Creating Emotion in Games:The Art and Craft of Emotioneering by David Freeman http://www.gamedev.net/columns/books/bookdetails.asp?productid=308&CategoryID=2 Designing Virtual Worlds by Richard Bartle http://www.gamedev.net/columns/books/bookdetails.asp?productid=360 Exploiting Online Games: Cheating Massively Distributed Systems by Greg Hoglund, Gary McGraw http://www.gamedev.net/columns/books/bookdetails.asp?productid=661&CategoryID=31

I haven't read those books, so i cannot say. Read reviews for them on amazon.com. Also, what is your programming experience? and how much of OpenGl/D3d do you know? That could help us suggest books for you.

I think it was more your first sentence which produced the "no".
I'd second that and also say "no".

Sentences like "I'd like to make my own mmorpg" posted in the beginners' forum are generally seen as a sign of not knowing what an effort it is to even program a small game.

Giving you a link to an easy tutorial was the hint to start small and then work up until you _maybe_ one day far far in the future, with the help of others and the experience of many finished games of various difficulty, might be able to even remotely think about planning to start making an MMORPG.

Better ask a question like "I'd like to program a small game to get to know the technologies behind making games. Which books would you suggest I should read? So far my knowledge concerning games programming is ... and .... I'm interested in making a RPG in the future. But of course I want to start small because I know that all other paths lead to the dark side (failure)."

Better never mention MMO in your sentences because if you do a search on the forums for MMORPG, you'll find that many people come here like you and want to make a MMORPG (even a small one is huge or as the name says "massive"!). 99.99999% of them will become frustrated and never make something even remotely similar in their whole life. Some realize that they should aim lower and start making something nice and small. Those are also the ones who have the chance later to collect enough knowledge necessary to make a MMORPG.

Enough talk, I think you get the point..

EDIT:
You said you already have read a book about RPG making. Did you finish a game without the MMO already? But since you posted in the "For beginners" forum, I assume that you don't have the experience to make an MMORPG... Correct me if I'm wrong..

I have learned most things off the net and the directX documentation.

I always start a small game, then learn some new technology and every one becomes better and every time I become more realistic in my goals. This time I have the feeling that I can make it. Time will be the only limiting factor.
I will order myself the following book because I found my knowledge insufficient:

- 3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development

No.

Sorry, but could you explain why these books arn't any good? Have you read them?

I think what DumitruSorin is trying to say is that you shouldn't go for an MMORPG if you haven't even finished a very simple game such as a Pong clone..

Edit: read the post above ^^

I also agree with the above. I believe the general path is something like.

Number guessing game--> Tetris --> Side scroller --> RPG of some sort.

I myself am working on input with a simple oval in java. I hope to build a game with a few friends, and I know it's goin to take us years to complete.
