Flickering with shadow volumes, problems with COLORWRITEENABLE

Im doing some shadow volumes and I got a really weird flickering problem. This is how I do it for the moment: Render the scene without color writing Render the scene/volumes with z-fail Render the scene with textures and clip At the beginning, before rendering the depth, I clear the color buffer. Then I disable color writing by g_pd3dDevice->SetRenderState(D3DRS_COLORWRITEENABLE, FALSE); and I get the flickering. But if I clear the color buffer again, before the last step (render with textures), I dont see any flickering. How is this possible? The color buffer can't have changed since COLORWRITE is disabled in the first three steps.
