Sports Simulation Help

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone can point me towards a book, article, or website that would give me information on how to create a function or set of functions that would allow me to generate simulated statistics, scores, etc. for a sports game I'm working on. I've looked through several books at my local Borders, and they're really isn't anything I can find that gives more than a cursory overview of this. Almost everything I've come across discusses more about engine development and AI development. I don't consider the simulation of scores and stats to be either of those, unless I'm just way off in my thinking. Any help would be appreciated. -Crux
