OpenGL Questions in OpenGL

I'm new in openGL and got a few questions to ask. Why is it that we would prefer to prevent the backs of polygons from drawings? Why the specular effect reuire normals to be calculated? Why do we need texture mapping? How would texture be used to create the effect of a flickering light blub? Thanks if anyone can help.

Actually, yes, is a few questions from a course I just started that use some OpenGL function, but I got no background to it. So just hope someone can enlighten me some pointer.

Thanks for the help. But I'm running out of the as I will need to do the presentation tomorrow, there isn't time for me to borrow or buy it. Is there any online site I can read up?

If you persist in being this lazy you will fail your course. Had you actually bothered to read the page OrangyTang gave you a link for, you would have noticed the link at the bottom for a HTML version of the book.
