XNA Fighting Game Collision

Hey everybody I have an interesting question that I cant seem to find any resources on, which I'm guessing that I'm just not looking in the right locations. I was challenged into making a 3D Fighting Game and I dont want help on actually displaying everything and moveing it around, what I do want help on is understanding collision detection within fighting games. Its obviously not going to be BoundingBox/Sphere collision, I could try per pixel collision detection but I have heard that it gets kind of pricy as far as the frame rate is concerned. So I guess I'm looking for information on collision detection for a fighting game.
