OpenGL viewport issues

I've split my opengl canvas up into 3 separate viewports. 2 smaller ones on the left top and bottom, and a main one to the right. I show my model in the main view, and on the lower left corner I have a small viewport to show the coordinate system so that when my model is rotated, so is the coordinate axis in the lower left. What I don't like about it is that ... when my model is zoomed to fill the screen, it only fills the main viewport and wastes a lot of the space in the 2 viewports on the left side. What's a better way to handle this?
