Terrain Editor Pt Texture Brushes

So far i've got my terrain editor set up so with a c++ DLL and C# interface the user can build there terrain and add up too three textures on each chunk, this is done with texture 'splatting' But i was wondering how i would allow the user to paint on their own textures. My idea was this: Create a new Alpha Texture, if one is specified great, if not create an empty one, this way when the user 'paints' on the terrain i just use the brush radius and click point to alter the Alpha textures values. Is this how its done or is there another way, i had a search on the forums but couldn't find anything. Also i don't really know how i would start to implement this, any suggestions would be good. Like i said i all ready use the code to 'splat' so it shouldn't be too hard to change over to the method i suggested, i just don't know if its possible.
