How do you invert a texture?

This is a newbie question.. I have a texture loaded in Direct3D. How does one invert the texture? GDI has a simple operation called SRCINVERT. Is there anything similar in DirectX? What about adding two textures using a bitwise AND operator?

I don't know about any FFP methods, so I would recommend the shader approach for inverting the texture. An example can be found here:
