GunGirl - Platform Game Public Beta
Hi there :)
I just found these forums and read a couple of threads and this seems to be a pretty interesting place. I've started making my own games a few months ago using a program I've found accidently.
My major game I'm working on is titled GunGirl. It's the sequel to the extreme simple first game of mine called GunDude. The story doesn't need a lot of words. A mean doctor has created an army of zombiemonsters and has taken over the world... yeah, that's it. You're one of the last humans on earth and of course you have to fight your way through the zombies to save the last survivors (and your own skin). The story is supposed to sound dumb, because I think platform games don't need a complicated story to have good gameplay.
The game is kinda ironic and I've tried to make fun of the storyline and the whole game shouldn't be taken to serious (like you climb up a large tree to fight a giant monkey on top of that... just don't ask me why and how this is needed for story purposes!) ;)
Anyway, you play as a nameless blonde girl with a big gun, running and jumping around through zombie infested places and shooting bullets and grenades at them. There are also puzzles you have to solve and traps to avoid. On your way you can find numberous upgrades and new weapons to fight the evergrowing army of the undead. Like all platform games you have to face a boss every now and then. You can also chat with a few NPCs to find out what's happening around you.
Between the levels you can move around on an overworld map (kinda like SMB3) to buy new items or save your game and choose the next level to play.
Right now the game is in public beta stadium. That means that there are 12 levels at the moment to play and 3 bosses. I'm still working on the game and I release new episodes about every 2 weeks. The savegames are 100% compatible between new versions, so you don't have to play the game all over when a new version appears. I would really like to hear your opinion about the game and feedback is very appreciated :)
here some pics:
Download the game here (40mb win executable, no install required) -> gungirl033.exe
btw. hit F1 to see controls
edit: I don't make any money out of this if you might think that. I'm doing this only in my free time and when the game is finished you can download it for free from my website. I just call it public beta because the game's not finished yet but I already wanted to see some reactions if you like the gameplay or if I have to think in different ways for eventual future freetime projects. Thanks a lot!
Have a great day :)

The graphics look very clean IMO. Looks well done. I especially love the backgrounds. I'll give it a test run when I can.
Well you put this in the wrong section. I suggest try putting it in the Your Announcements section. This section is for discussing game design.
Just from the screen shots I see you have a picture of Bruce Willis. I hope you got his permission to use his likeness or that it's just a place holder until you can get another person's picture. If not you might want to consider finding someone else's picture.
I'll check out the game soon.

Well I played through the first level and most of the second before I had to stop.
One suggestion I'd like to make is let the user choose the controls. The reason I say this is because some keys are hot keys for different operating systems. Like playing your game I found out the hard way that hitting the shift key 5 times is a short cut to sticky keys for windows vista and it kept interrupting the game, the main reason I stopped playing.
Second some of the jumps are just on the double jump limit making it difficult if you didn't hit it just right and since you don't have a the control scheme showing anywhere unless you know about the F1 it's hard for someone to figure that out. At least for the first few levels you might want to make it easier to make the jumps.
Third you might want to make more of a main menu. Shouldn't be to hard. Just so you can implement the first suggestion. Also you can make it so you can see credits and other things that will make it look more polished.
Those are my suggestions but otherwise it played pretty good.

"The game looks very ok. Are the pics of the chick public domain?"
Probably not, and I am sure the Bruce Willis pic isn't either.
But the game makes me remember back to games like Commander Keen and such. Nice!

199 views and not a single comment? what did I do wrong? :(
For the record, 199 views on GameDev is nothing; that's about a five minute lifespan for any remotely interesting thread.
(Also, moved it to Your Announcements, leaving a link in Game Design.)
I liked it. I think your level design relies too much on double jump, to the point where simple jump is almost useless. You also need to develop some early missions that explain the interface to the users. I think you made a lot of interesting game design choices (like the fact that Gun Girl uses a shotgun, so after a set number of shells she has to pause to reload, which introduces an element of basic strategy from the get-go - I liked that a lot), but until the user understands them and their consequences, the game can seem a little more frustrating.
Like I said, though, I liked it. It's an excellent ode to classic side-scrolling shoot-em-up games, and a lot of the conventions are familiar to fans. Just a little more polish (improved game menu - you should let the user select "New Game" or "Continue", which should really be "Load Game", using the enter key, for instance) and this could be an excellent indie release.
I thought the Bruce Willis photo for the soldier you meet was hilarious, btw! [smile]
Okay, bug report: after playing a game of Gun Girl, my application windows (that were open when I started it up) fail to come to the front when I click on them or alt+tab to them. In fact, when they get focus they seem to go to the back.
Something to look into.
(Does Gun Girl ever get a machine gun, or is it shotgun all the way?)

nice !
i played until level 6, but now i have to go sleep. that and the low visibility really turned me off. seeing only a little circle where you can barely see the zombies because of the water is not fun :-(
i found the presentation of the game really fun, and the levels are nice too.
What are cherries for ?
oh and awesome choice of music ! you can never go wrong with maiden !
I also got the sticky key problem that someone mentioned, and i m on xp, not vista, so they both have that problem.
Having the possibility to reconfigure controls, or at least not use shift key would be good.
maybe i ll try to get past level 6 if you tell me i wont face some 'in the dark' levels anymore.
nice job !
