One of the things that holds you back when starting in homebrew game creating is loading and displaying model formats. It seems that the easy way out is figuring out a model format then looking for a game engine that supports it. instead, try to find a game engine then work out how to model for it.

What exactly are you looking for? do you want a full blown game engine, and just to make mods for it, or do you want to write one from scratch? Given more information we can surely help you out.

Myself, I am using .md2 animation which is old fashioned, and I am using a file format for an application called ac3d, which is a decent 3d editor. My game idea involves a large city full of zombies and the player searching for the parts of his computer that got scattered by the zombie infestation.

Why do you want .obj support specifically? Does the .obj format provide some specific functionality that other formats don't? Either way, .obj files don't store animation data.

Here's a tip: look into model conversion tools. You're not limited to the format that your modelling tool outputs. So what if .obj isn't supported? Look for a tool that converts .obj to .3ds, or even better, export to .3ds directly if your modelling package supports that (and if it doesn't, perhaps there's a plugin that does).
