Hello, I want to use several features of OpenGL that have been available as an extension a very long time now, for example S3 texture compression. I keep hearing every time a new version of OpenGL comes out that some of these extensions have now become part of the API itself. Does this mean I can use them without the hassle of loading the extensions? Sorry if this sounds a little dumb, but I never really understood this. Jeroen

Saying "loading extensions" isn't really correct. What you have to load is functions the import library doesn't load for you automatically. It doesn't matter if it's an extension or a core function; if the import library doesn't import it for you, you have to do it yourself. Furthermore, some extensions doesn't introduce any extra functions, so there's nothing to load at all.

So in short, if the extension you're interested in is not loaded by the import library (most likely anything of interest if you're using the standars Windows implementation for example), it most likely won't load the corresponding functions from the core either. And if the extension doesn't add new functions, there's nothing to load at all. So whether it's core or extension doesn't really make any difference.

So I can't use features that were introduced into the core API at a later time without importing them into my app. Ok, then I'll just continue to use GLEW for these, like I always have. I was just curious if I could use the "old" features without it in later OpenGL versions.
