surface.getGraphics() fails with invalid call exception

I'm trying to write into a texture using GDI calls under MDX and I can't seem to get getGraphics to return a vaild Graphics object. Here's what I'm currently doing - does any of this look out of place? Texture texture = new Texture(device, 64, 64, 1, Usage.None, Format.R8G8B8, Pool.Managed); Surface surface = texture.GetSurfaceLevel(0); Graphics surface_graphics = surface.GetGraphics(); Any ideas? I'm running this in MDX on a Motorola Q - I don't think there are debug runtimes for that platform.

Any other ideas?
