I'm after starting work on a basic 3d engine as a bit of a learning project. I was just wondering whether people thought I should use Shader model 1.0 or 2.0. The engine won't be that complex you know, just about the level of a '04-'05 game.

What's your reasoning for wanting to make a decision like that at this stage?

I remember a rule of thumb as being that you ought to use the lowest shader model you can get away with for each shader. This means choosing shader models on a per-shader basis rather than on a whole-engine basis. Of course you can fix your shader model if you want to, it just seems a bit restrictive to me.

Anyway, 2.0 is newer than 1.0 and is widely supported nowadays, so that has my vote out of the two of them.

I agree with dmatter. Only the very cheapest cards can not pull of 2.0. In fact I would expect most of my users to have 3.0 so I think you would be safe using 2.0. Although whenever I make shaders intending to use a lower version I always find some obscure restriction or error that I can not solve without upping the version. Although that could easily be caused by (current) lack of skill.
Hope that helps,

There's not really much reason to target anything lower than SM 2.0, IMO. Keep in mind that you're not locked to one profile for all of your shaders, you can create advanced shaders in SM3.0 and substitute in a simpler shader for machines that can't run that profile.
