My DInput won't work! GetDeviCeState

when I call:
static BYTE keystate[256];

keyboard->GetDeviceState(256, (LPVOID)keystate);

I get this error:

keystate unsigned
1. Posting the actual error would be helpful.
2. Don't do that.

I have to break the program, look at the error to the bottom left and then stop debugging.

My error is that when it hits that it says that all my keystate numbers are unsigned.

What else could I use for input???
