Changing GL_COLOR_ARRAY on the fly

Hi, I have a scenegraph with different types of objects, one of which being a mesh that is defined and rendered using vertex arrays. These meshes have a GL_COLOR_ARRAY to define the colors in the vertici. Now i have another parameter "transparency" in the nodes of the scenegraph that defines the transparency of the object (changing this parameter propagates through the scenegraph so you can make complete subtrees transparent). I would like to be able to change the transparency parameter and render correctly without having to recalculate all the values in GL_COLOR_ARRAY, which seems inefficient.
