UV map doesn't go on model correctly

Hi, iv'e been experiencing an issue with UV maps. The problem is, whenever I make a model in Maya 8.0 for example, and then import it into Blender, or Truespace, which are also 3d modelers/animators, I apply the uv map I made, and it doesn't go on the model correctly. Or, sometimes the model will turn out not to have UV's when imported into other 3d modelers. Then I have to go through the uv maps I made, and re make them until they work the way I want in the modeler I imported them into. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'm not entirely sure about the export from Max but:

1. Make sure you have UV box or button selected
2. .obj and .3ds work 100% from max to blender. I tell artists to use those mainly. Never had a problem.
