PhysX and Character Controller Joints

Hi all, I want to have my PhysX character controller pickup objects in my environment. I can do this fine with Joints but I have to use the Charater->getActor method which PhysX says should only be used to 'read' data from. From this I assume that I shouldn't use it for Joints (or can I? its a bit confusing :) The output is fine, the Joint works the way I want it to complete with the collisions but I was wondering if there is another method that doesnt go against PhysX's remarks?
