Does the XML file request that you use an *.XML extension? I am planning on using an XML file to save data for my game and was curious to see if I could save the files as something else such as *.dat or *.sav as long as the file was formated as proper XML.

You can name it whatever you like, as long as the file contents is well-formed. You don't even need a file at all, because tinyxml can read a document from a string too (passing a filename just happens to be the easiest way).
