Say there's a song out there that I desperately want to use for my project. Something by a major commercial artist. What can I expect to pay for something like that, and how would I go about getting the rights?

You should contact proper copyright owner for licensing.

However, licensing one song would probably cost you more than hiring a professional composer to produce a complete soundtrack for your game ;)

Amen!! Also keep in mind that some bands are picky about what or who they license their music out to. Not only do you have to meet the financial needs, you have to meet the band (and the band's management) approval.

It might be better to find a talented composer that can get close to that style. Will get more bang for your buck!
