OpenGL and SDL surfaces

Hi all, if I am using SDL with OpenGL, is it better to use OpenGL for all the rendering (including bitmaps on 2d quad), or can I use SDL bitmaps for 2d shapes and OpenGL for 3d shapes?

While it is impossible to blit SDL Surfaces to an OpenGL enabled screen, it may be beneficial to know that you can still use SDL surfaces to load images for making textures, for instance.
