Video memory optimizations

Hello. Currently my program is a memory hog, mostly on the video card due to hi-res textures. I was wondering if anyone knows any good ways to optimize memory usage on video cards? Lowering texture resolution is not what I'm looking for. Is it possible to push the data from video memory into regular memory temporarily and then back again, all without releasing and re-binding the data?

Thanks for the info.

Regarding the driver, are you sure that the driver will unload textures and memory? I have a scenario now that when I run my application, it takes up a nice chunk of memory. I do not minimize or close my application, it remains running. At the same time I try to run another application that is graphically heavy and it fails to load because it cannot load all of its textures/meshes/etc.
