Are there any good alternatives for real-time fur rendering than the shells and fins method? Maybe some shell-space ray casting or something? Minimum target hardware is 8800 Ultra. Also, how to do self-shadowing...

You may be able to do something along the lines of what is outlined in this paper: http://www.cg.tuwien.ac.at/research/publications/2007/Habel_2007_IAG/

It looks like a perfect candidate for fur rendering, you could even animate the fur to make it look like its blowing in the wind. I guess the only thing you would really have to change to make that algoritm work is change the grass texture to a fur texture.

Actually, you may also have to do something special if your looking directly downwards at the fur, since that seems to be a slight problem with the grass rendering, but otherwise, should work well

Hope that helps
